29 February 2008

Thank you.

A serious job is no excuse.

When I chose that name for this blog almost 15 months ago, I hadn't the slightest idea just how meaningful a mantra it would become for so many women.

Or for myself.

I started ASJiNE for two primary reasons, the first of which was to raise awareness among women, most notably those in the overachieving professional crowd, that placing daily priority on putting together a smart, figure flattering, venue appropriate look was a critical component in achieving their professional goals.

Not more critical than the graduate degree, not as critical as the gets-along-with-the-guys quick wit, but still, critical.

The second reason was a selfish one - to build up a body of writing in an area in which I had enormous passion but absolutely no rightful claim, no pedigree, no legitimacy; my writing here would serve as my entry into an industry everyone in my life knows is the one in which I was meant to make my most meaningful professional mark.

Over the past few weeks, I've grown increasingly sure that my value-added on the first front has run its course. As I wrote in a recent post, I can only write so many scathing reviews of block heels, French manicures (and pedicures) and be-tanktopped chunky upper-arms before my "shtick" becomes predictable and my persuasiveness loses its punch.

And on the second front, well, there are some big changes a comin' in your Editrix's life, and these are changes that will require a good deal more of her time than her current blogging schedule allows.

So this is a bit awkward and more than a bit unexpected, but I think today, a day we see only once every four years, is the perfect time for me to cap the lip balm on this venture and bid all of you adieu.

Thank you to everyone who read, commented, e-mailed, and especially to those whose public personal attacks taught me the difference between hateful words that matter and hateful words best used for e-mail fodder among girlfriends.

I'll miss this. I really will.

best,
Johanna

p.s. one more thing, the consignment event will definitely still move forward but under the sole guidance of the lovely Maria -- please check out her blog, Righteous (re)Style, for any and all updates pertaining thereto.

now that you're no longer writing the blog, I take it you have more time for a normal, active social life?

still interested...
you know who

DC misses you, J! Like Teek and a few others, I've also been inspired by you to start running. I have my first half marathon at the end of August. Wish me luck!

love love love the hair!

Anonymous said...

just found this blog! thank god for the archives or else this work day (yes I have to work today) would be inching by at a glacial pace. where'd you get that tee you're wearing in your photo? it's wicked!

Anonymous said...

Is the blond 'do part of a makeover episode on the reality show? It's not that i dislike it or anything, it's just that you always came across as a die hard brunette. Not sure why I got that impression really. You still look (pardon the expression) fierce, but somehow the dark hair seemed to complement the fashion style you displayed on this blog better. I am curious to see how your style has evolved as a result of working in fashion (yes, I cannot imagine that you didn't win this thing). As pulled together as you always seemed, I can't imagine that it wouldn't have influenced you at all.

Anonymous said...

I can already see the style evolution in your Sugar Daddy picks. Great to see you breaking free from all the highwaisted skirts and ruffles ;)

Tho I like the blond and all that it exudes, I agree the brown hair is a better fit for you. Can't wait to see the makeover show!!

Anonymous said...

The makeover show, of course! I knew J wouldn't have come up with the blond on her own. Can't you change it back now or do they require you to keep it as is?

Anonymous said...

that's a seriously cool neckline in the new photo

Anonymous said...

love the haircut in this photo, and the neckline. it's a bit insane how we're all checking in, trying to catch glimpses of what's going on with you, what you're doing, what you're wearing... we miss you.

Brooke said...

I know you will figure this out when the show airs, but to save you the suspense - Johanna came back from NYC a brunette. The blonde thing is her own doing. It looks fabulous by the way!

Anonymous said...

Tell the CW to release more clips and more clips with you in them!

Anonymous said...

www.cwtv.com/Stylista

When will they put more information up??

Anonymous said...

The hair is very Mia Farrow! Love!

Catherine said...

I don't have a TV, so I will have to go to my gym, which does have TVs, in order to catch the show. Thus I accomplish two goals: witnessing Johanna's rise to style stardom and a lower body workout. Jo inspires again, even from afar!

Anonymous said...

You in a plain tee kissing your dog, now that's fashion in my book!!

keep this picture up for a while will you?

Anonymous said...

Stylista looks fab, girl. Just watched the full trailer over on Fashion Is Spinach and can't wait until it airs. Please please tell me you outlasted that horrible girl with the boobs. Please!

Anonymous said...

gym shorts and heels, a new look for Fall?

;)

Anonymous said...

JO! That new picture of you kissing Monty is ADROABLE!!!

He looks to happy!

Anonymous said...

Saw the stylista commercial this weekend! looks sooooo good!!

Anonymous said...

In love with the hair! Any word on when the premiere of the show is? Will you be watching at an open viewing party?

Anonymous said...

Where did you get that black dress you're wearing at the end of the commercial? It's sleeveless with a high neck. I love it and must have it!

christine said...

whoa you're embracing leggings now? things have changed :)

Unknown said...

Just found you, and have about read everything in the archives! Good Luck on Everything! The show sounds fab, except Miss Slowey cannot walk in heels! I hope the clip of you in the red is showing her how to WORK IT! Hope to see at least one more update, to let us know how you are! Love the blonde!

Anonymous said...

omg girl you're all over the cw this weekend! i think i've seen you catwalk down that hallway about a gazillion times since saturday!!!

Anonymous said...

Back in black! (or brown, as the case may be). I like it. I liked the blond too. have you ever considered going with shorter bangs? more of a Mia Farrow type look? Sorry, not that you solicited hair advice or anything. I just think with your bone structure you could really pull it off.

Anonymous said...

is it just the angle or are you that tiny?

in other news, so excited for stylista! like someone else mentioned i've also been seeing you (and your legs!) all over the cw lately.

everytime I watch a reality show now all I can think about is how weird it'll be to switch on the tv and see YOU standing up there crying, explaining, defending and eyerolling!

Let me guess, you liked Kenlie's dress in this episode :)

i thought the same exact thing when i saw kenley's dress last night! so you!!

Paris Hilton footwear, huh... Hmmm... No comment. :-)

Anonymous said...

Jo,
The benefit of a bad economy? Sales in the least likely places! After years of running past Saks Jandel in Friendship Heights, I just spotted the first Sale sign ever. 50%-80% of all brands, Lanvin included. Go!

Anonymous said...

I am so loving that new haircut!

Anonymous said...

I think I like you sullen better than smiling

Anonymous said...

I agree with anon above. Not that you don't have a beautiful smile (you do) but it just doesn't work with your blog persona.

Anonymous said...

bye bye darling, dress up!

Anonymous said...

don't listen to them - LOVE seeing a smile!

Anonymous said...

your haircut is so friggin cool, j. too cool for dc. come to nyc and soon!

Anonymous said...

That Marc Jacobs ring in today's "Sugar Daddy" is...well, kind of stupid, actually. The other ring is cute.

I can't imagine anyone paying any amount of money for that "edgy" MJ monstrosity.

Anonymous said...

Stupid to YOU maybe, but I love it. Things like this are just a matter of opinion...

Johanna said...

I originally planned to feature the 'Starburst' cuff (which I actually LOVE and is currently featured in the new Elle), but for some reason I couldn't find a photo of it anywhere online. While I don't love the ring, I do like it quite a bit...hold off on the "stupid" verdict until you see the cuff. It's like jewelry buttah.

Anonymous said...

I love any piece of jewelry that can double as a weapon. Keeps the guys and the hating women in line ;)

Anonymous said...

I second the "it looks stupid" opinion. I mean, I like bold and unusual pieces, but this is just silly. Jewelry is meant to enhance one's mood and one's appearance, not distract and get in the way.

You can't hold a cocktail with that ring, you can't hold hands, you can't type a well-crafted blog post...it would get in your way, and that's not enhancing. It's the epitome of frivolous, wasteful fashion--no style, no grace, no elegance.

And yes, this is just my opinion. I am curious about the bracelet.

Anonymous said...

I just saw that Stylista was pushed up a week to the 22nd!!! I haven't been this excited for a show since.....I don't even know when!!

No matter what happens, you'll always be our favorite hometown Stylista :)

Anonymous said...

nice choices today j, love them both.

8 weeks and counting....

Anonymous said...

i miss your blog so much i can't stand it.

Anonymous said...

Just saw the new Stylista clip and can't wait to see what drove such a nice girl to throw a bag at someone!

Anonymous said...

Really? You would really buy a white pocket T-shirt for $138? Please tell me that was posted only as a foil for the reasonably priced $17 white T-shirt. Please!? :)

Johanna said...

If money were no object, I would pretty much buy anything and everything AWang comes out with. You should feel the cotton on those tees...absolutely incredible. Scarily delicate but still, incredible.

Anonymous said...

I expect a photo of this new hair cut on Monday, ya hear?

Anonymous said...

i think it an awful thing that all of these people are already rooting for you when they don't even know what a malicious, conniving, and terribly scheming person you really are. one can only hope that the camera will see past all of the fronts i hear you tried to put up.

Anonymous said...

Put up or shut up, anon 11:59. If you have dirt on Johanna, dish it up and let us decide whether she deserves our support.

But your mean-spirited comment is probably based on no facts or actual information, so you probably have nothing to share.

Therefore I continue to root for a girl who seems to be fun, well-mannered, stylish, and friendly.

Good luck, Johanna!

Anonymous said...

anon 11:59, i'm with you one hundred percent. she's a pig in lipstick with a bad rihanna hairdo. i'm rooting for danielle!

Anonymous said...

it's quite an accomplishment when you still have haters six and a half months after you drop off the public radar. Personally I'd take it as a compliment. Can't wait for the show and to watch you come out on top!

Anonymous said...

Jo is not a conniving person AT ALL. Judgmental and funny as hell, yes. Conniving and malicious, no. You've got your facts way wrong.

Anonymous said...

Actually Kate is the one who is getting the most malicious comments on this blog and no one knows her either and Johanna is leaving them up. It's best not to judge any of the other contestants, root for Johanna if you want but the show hasn't come out yet people. No one knows anything so Johanna's friends really need to ease up on everyone involved. She is there amongst 10 other people it's not the Johanna show and she's really not in any clips so calm down. I'm rooting for all of them. This will be a great show! Seriously cut the negative comments though. Johanna will do great I'm sure but it's too soon to be so hateful towards anyone else.

aswann said...

Johanna,

My comment is prefaced with this disclaimer so you know that it is out of genuine concern and not the result of one to many swigs of haterade. Although I found your blog [assertions] a little harsh and elitist for my tastes, I also found it engagingly well-written and looked forward to the inspirational style therein (my blog-based perception of you is no reason to dislike you personally, especially considering that we've never met). So, my comment is neither that of a blind, jealous hater or fervent supporter, I am trying to merely be objective. That being said, I could not help but notice that your arms, although toned, look very thin in your latest picture. Aside from the slight curve of your left deltoid, they're seemingly uniform in width from the shoulder down and almost bony. As a kinesiology major, I can appreciate your hard-earned physique, and maybe your body type deems you forever naturally smaller up top. However, I don't think that you are adequately supporting your caloric needs, maybe so much so that the protein in arms is being compromised. Your thin arms are beautiful, but so are biceps and triceps. Of course, this is none of my business, but maybe you could add a more generous portion of Gorgonzola to your Cosi salad, hoist Monte up for a few extra kisses, and order another adult beverage next time you're at the bar? Mull it over. And take care.

Anonymous said...

OMG! Johanna's picture is on the front page of Yahoo right now! Awesome!

aswann said...

Oops, I meant "one toO many" not "one to many".

Anonymous said...

Where are your archives, missy?

You look lovely, as always. But maybe a few too many pounds gone because of business/stress? Please enjoy yourself and take care of yourself.

(Also said out of love, not hateration.)

Anonymous said...

please stop telling Johanna she looks thin. that's what makes anorexics happy.

Anonymous said...

You look aaaaaamaaaaazing in the Stylista profile on CW's website!! And your choices in the interests, fashion icons/designers section (and obviously, your job) really set you apart as the most interesting one to watch. I'm biased because I know you, but it's totally true.

Anonymous said...

I'm literally peeing my pants with excitement over seeing you on this show! No one deserves it more. NO ONE!

Anonymous said...

Pretty please put your Archives back up! That's the only way some of us can get by since you stopped posting. There really is no other DC fashion blog that provides the same level of writing, advice, humor, and service as you did. Have you ever considered keeping the site itself and the concept as your own and passing the blogging duties on to another writer or two?

I'm biting my fingernails watching you on Stylista!! Hope you win.

Anonymous said...

it bothers me to no end that they won't inform viewers about your experience as a really successful fashion blogger!! why is that? to have you bunched in there with that group of children who seem to know NOTHING about the kind of fashion Elle features is so embarrassing. I just pray you don't fall to their level, J.

Anonymous said...

I agree with the above commenter. I had no idea you had this blog not to mention such a great witty sense of humor. My guess is the producers are trying to downplay you? Yesterday the Chinese speaking, next week who knows?? My money is on you or Cologne, you 2 are the only ones who seem to be there for the right reasons.

christine said...

I wish the show would show more of your humor & personality! I guess maybe you aren't enough of a drama queen to get the amount of screen time as some *other* contestants...and not to sound creepy but it's fun to see you talking on tv after following your blog for so long.

Anonymous said...

I just discovered your blog and I love it!

Anonymous said...

Tonight's episode looks goooood! You're pretty prominent in this one it seems. Can't wait for 9pm!!!

Anonymous said...

you are flying so deliciously under the radar on this show.....i love it!

Anonymous said...

imho, doing this show was not a good career move for you. you stand out like the sorest of sore thumbs in this group. every time I watch I hear "which of these does not belong..." in a loop in my head. the show is bad and it's making you look bad by association. i'm praying to God you won this thing, but the best person often doesn't. you shouldn't have opted for the shortcut babe :(

Anonymous said...

I just spent the better part of the afternoon reading through your archives and you not only have a unique eye for trends but you are a seriously talented writer too. Why they haven't shown any of this on Stylista, I'm left completely in the dark. You better win.

Anonymous said...

love the blog

sarahsouth said...

i love how you have gotten my mother to start watching reality television. you should hear her commentary on the whole thing. it's like she's ready to write a whole thesis about the show.

Anonymous said...

You are stylish and a talented blogger. But you need to distance yourself from this show as much as possible! None of the contestants, including you by association, look remotely capable of becoming a "taste-maker." All I see are whiny, self-important, egotistical children who would never cut it in any business environment, let alone fashion.

Anonymous said...

this show is really starting to look like a joke. if you won, congratulations, if not...go back to blogging. the women of DC need you!!

Anonymous said...

I've been following you blog forever and noticed on the show tonight that you have a tattoo on your inner wrist. Given your impeccable style and taste I am super curious as to what passed your exacting standards to be permanently inked on your body?? Johanna for the win!

Anonymous said...

Oh...I'm so glad that you didn't get booted last night! You're too classy to go! :) I hope you win!

Unknown said...

Thank God you didn't get kicked off last night! I think you are long overdue to be on a winning team... but I do hope it goes to individual competitions soon, because the rest of the people on the show (besides maybe Deshawn) are not impressive and I think you will shine more on your own!!!

Anonymous said...

Happy Holidays, Johanna! You have a lot of readers who miss you, especially in D.C. Good luck with the rest of "Stylista." But seriously...come back!

I've worked in the fashion magazine industry in NYC for over a decade and watch your show every week. I've read your entire blog and I'm literally in love with your passion and of course style. I'm not really a fan of Johanna the "Stylista" but I really really like you as a human being. You're beautiful Johanna,
